The Importance of Determining Territorial Boundaries for Sustainable Development

In an effort to realize equitable and sustainable development, the determination and confirmation of territorial boundaries are the main foundations that cannot be ignored. Clear and verified territorial boundaries not only determine the administrative authority of a region, but also become the basis for planning, resource management, and effective public services.

Why is it Important to Determine Territorial Boundaries?

As a company that has experience working on Boundary Determination and Affirmation (PPBW) projects in various regions in Indonesia, we understand that clear boundaries are the beginning of good governance. Many problems such as overlapping land, conflicts between villages or districts, and obstacles in the distribution of development budgets can be minimized through legal boundaries based on accurate spatial data.

Furthermore, the determination of boundaries contributes significantly to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially on goal 11: “Sustainable Cities and Settlements.” With definite boundaries, local governments can prepare precise Spatial Plans, build infrastructure evenly, and develop local potential based on the geographical and social characteristics of their areas. This is important, especially in rural areas, islands, and underdeveloped areas that often experience marginalization of policies due to the lack of certainty of boundaries.

In practice, the PPBW process that we carry out always prioritizes a participatory approach and modern technology. Starting from drone-based mapping, integration of spatial data with legal documents, to facilitating deliberations between regions—all are done to ensure that the PPBW results are not only legally valid, but also accepted and understood by the community.

We believe that regional boundaries are not just lines on a map, but rather a reflection of identity, local sovereignty, and an important tool for advancing equitable and sustainable development. Therefore, investment in determining regional boundaries is a strategic step for local governments, development institutions, and the wider community in designing a future for an orderly, inclusive, and competitive region.
